Ask a longtime Wellfleet resident where they'll be Wednesday morning in August, and the answer probably starts with a bakery that no longer exists. The croissant line at PB has been part of the summer choreography for years. This year, that address is running a different restaurant, on a different schedule, at a very different price point.
That single swap is the clearest signal of what August 2026 actually looks like in town. The dining map moved. The event calendar stretched. And a few of the summer's best nights are on weekdays.
The Lecount Hollow Address That Changed Hands
Chef-owner Philippe Rispoli closed the bakery and opened a French restaurant in the same building. Chef-owner Philippe Rispoli shut down his Wellfleet bakery and opened a French restaurant in its place. Chez Chloe Bistro, named in honor of his daughter, offers a three-course prix fixe menu Wednesday through Sunday. The address is 15 Lecount Hollow Road, South Wellfleet, with a prix fixe menu of $125 per person, cocktails $13 to $17, and reservations required.
That is a real shift in how the south end of town eats in August. A morning bakery pulling walk-in traffic became an evening bistro pulling reservations five nights a week. If you've been driving down 6 assuming the pastry case is still open, adjust. If you've been looking for a place to take visiting family for a proper sit-down dinner, you have a new option that didn't exist last summer.
Rispoli grew up outside of Lyon and cooked with acclaimed chefs including Paul Bocuse before working with Daniel Boulud in New York and Las Vegas, per the Boston Globe's July review.
Worth reading the full piece before you book. The room is small, the menu is fixed, and it books up.
What's Actually Under the Preservation Hall Tent on August 8
Wellfleet Preservation Hall is running a first-year fundraiser with the Center for Coastal Studies that hasn't been on anyone's August rotation before. The event is called Beyond the Buoys, on Saturday, August 8 at 5pm, in collaboration with the Center for Coastal Studies. The center donated buoys recovered from beaches across Massachusetts by Laura Ludwig and her beach cleanup volunteers, and Outer Cape artists repurposed them into pieces to be auctioned.
The evening includes drinks, apps, a raw bar, live music from Jordan Renzi and friends, a live and silent auction, a talk on art and conservation by Laura Ludwig, and an arts and crafts table, with all proceeds benefiting Preservation Hall. This is the kind of thing that will be on the calendar every August by 2028. Being at the first one is a different experience than being at the fifth.
The Beachcomber's August, Night by Night
The Beachcomber has its schedule posted and it is denser than most people remember it being on a random summer Wednesday. If you plan by which band you actually want to see, the week reads like this:
- Friday, August 7: The Saint Cecilia, Central American hard rock from Costa Rica, with opener Porcelain, an Austin post-hardcore and noise rock quartet
- Saturday, August 8: Shango Axe at the Beachcomber
- Thursday, August 13: Josh Ayala and the Doghouse Tenants
- Friday, August 14: Tjovi Ginen, Haitian Roots
- Saturday, August 15: Aldous Collins Band, late show at 9pm
If you have out-of-town guests staying a week, that is a real range to work with. It is also a reason to skip Saturday if you dislike crowds and take a Thursday instead. The Thursday shows tend to run cleaner on parking at Cahoon Hollow.
Under the Big Top Through Labor Day
Payomet is running its circus theater production at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater tent. Payomet's Cirque by the Sea brings another original circus theater production to the Big Top at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, written, designed, and performed in-house, with acrobats, aerialists, and jugglers. The run is June 25 through September 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, Sundays at 4pm.
The useful thing to notice is the runtime. This is not a two-weekend Labor Day novelty. It runs almost the entire summer, which means you can go on a Tuesday in the last week of August when the town has thinned out and get a genuinely different experience than a July Sunday. If you have kids or grandkids visiting late in the month, the Tuesday 6pm is the pick.
The Weekday Rhythms Worth Keeping
The best argument for staying in town on a Thursday in August is not a headline event. It is a set of standing weekday habits that quietly hold the month together.
The Makers Market runs at Mayo Beach each Thursday from June 25 to August 27, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. That is four remaining Thursdays after this piece goes up, and then the market is done for the season. If you have been meaning to go, the window is narrower than it feels.
The Wicked Oyster on Main Street runs live acoustic music on the patio with the Salt Marsh Jazz Quartet, pairing local seafood, oysters, and cocktails; reservations are not required but recommended through OpenTable. A quiet Tuesday jazz night on the patio is a better use of a resident August than fighting for a Saturday table.
For anyone who plays or just likes to listen, the Open Music Session at Pond Hill School runs the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 7 to 9pm, with August 4 and August 18 on the calendar, at 65 Old Paine Hollow Road, covering Irish, Scottish, French, Old Time, Folk, and Country, with donations welcome and BYO refreshments. This is the kind of standing weeknight most seasonal visitors never find.
The Youth Film Fest and the September Bookend
Two dates worth writing down before Labor Day thinking kicks in.
The Wellfleet Youth Film Festival at Preservation Hall has its live festival screening on August 22 at 6:00 pm, with recognition and cash prizes awarded for screenplay, editing, cinematography, and originality. Admission to the film festival on August 22nd is free. If you have a kid on the Cape who touches a camera, this is the room to be in. If you don't, it is still one of the more genuinely local hours of programming the Hall runs all summer.
Then the season doesn't end where it used to. The 4th Annual Outer Cape Music Festival is on Saturday, September 5, 2026 from 4:00 PM at Wellfleet Pier, and Baha Men play the Wellfleet Town Pier on Sunday, September 6, from 5:00 PM. If you own here and have been treating Labor Day as the closing bell, the last real weekend on the water is the one after.
If You Only Pick Three Nights This Month
For a resident August that reflects what actually changed this year, the shortlist is:
- Saturday, August 8 at Preservation Hall. Beyond the Buoys is a first-year event tied to real conservation work down the road at the Center for Coastal Studies.
- A Wednesday through Sunday dinner at Chez Chloe Bistro. Whether you go once or wait a year, at least know the address changed and the format changed with it.
- A Tuesday under the Big Top at WHAT before September 6. Cirque by the Sea on a late-August Tuesday is the town at its quietest and the tent at its best.
Everything else is a bonus. A Thursday morning at Mayo Beach for the Makers Market before August 27. A Tuesday jazz set at the Wicked Oyster instead of a Saturday reservation battle. A Pond Hill open session on August 18 if you've never gone.
The through-line here is straightforward: the summer no longer peaks and empties. The bakery became a bistro. Payomet's tent stays up until Labor Day weekend. The music festival at the Pier lands the weekend after. Plan by last year's shape and you'll show up at a locked bakery door and miss half of what's actually on.
If you own in Wellfleet and this is the kind of calendar detail you'd rather have in a short email than dig up yourself, I keep an ongoing list for clients past and future. When the time comes to talk about the house itself, that conversation is easier if we already know each other. Bantick Properties is here on the Cape year-round. Let's make your next move, together.
